I think I’ve played enough Mass Effect to write up a review on it.
Mass Effect is a space RPG with your typical hero trying to save the galaxy from a good guy gone bad scenario, only you get to decide the hero’s origins, facial features, skills, and profession. Once created you’re more or less introduced to your character through a few well designed cutscenes and your purpose is brought to light. From there you go on to complete missions and assignments throughout the galaxy, gaining experience points along the way and conversing with a variety of alien and human forms alike. During these conversations you are able to make decisions that can alter the conversations in and out of your favor. You may hate someone enough to disagree and argue with each time a new chat option is available or simply tell them what they want to hear. It’s all up to you. Mostly.
As you level your character, you gain points which may be used to improve various skills and abilities, such as biotech, assault, and something or other. Through the continuous use of missions and goals, your character will improve and possibly save the galaxy from some guy named Saren who is doing stuff I haven’t really figured out yet.
Anyways, I think the game is pretty good. It has a wide range of playability with multiple paths to take and many top notch cutscenes and conversations to view. Being able to interact with a multitude of alien races and humans, as well as machines, gives this game a very interactive feel.
My qualms about the game would have to be the loading screens. Oh man are there loading screens. From traveling to other galaxies, to moving from one area of the citadel to another, I am constantly in tune with a loading screen or saving content. It takes away some of the game’s enjoyment as I am stuck waiting for the next event to occur over and over. And then there’s the elevators; seemingly used to hide more loading screens by forcing you to sit inside one while it traverses up or down while playing the typical elevator music and sometimes spitting out some news or conversation.
All and all, I am enjoying this game and would give it a 7.5 out of 10.
Pros:
- Massive space RPG
- Beautiful cutscenes and voice acting
- Immersive storyline
Cons:
- Evil loading screens
- Smelly krogans
